It is waterproof, but it will leak water if it is in contact with water for a long time.

I like the overall design and the fact that it's made of cotton instead of plastic. I've tried it and I like it. I would not recommend it for intensive dishwashing. My guess is that because it is cotton it will naturally absorb some water or moisture, although it is waterproof (if contact with water or moisture is too long). I recommend it for informal dining and for places where some humidity is to be expected due to cooking. Also, it works well with other chemicals and fats.
