Rigid, seems strong but because the plastic is so hard I think it breaks easily on any impact. The tab on the back supports it like a picture frame and isn't very stable, it's very easy to break off accidentally. My biggest complaint is that the keys aren't exactly aligned, sometimes you can control the volume, sometimes you can't. When I first noticed this I was horrified as I thought it was my new iPad Air but I pulled it out and no...it is and I didn't buy the wrong one, the sizes are correct. The ports are properly opened, but the buttons don't press the actual buttons to allow them to function. I'm buying a new one and I'm willing to pay a lot more. It worked to provide minimal protection for a couple of months with light home use.
