Review on NovAtel Waypoint Inertial Explorer by Joshua Coulter

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best affordable Inertial Navigation and Attitude Sensors for Desktop and Mobile.

The user interface is very intuitive. I was able to quickly learn how to use it for my specific applications. It can be used as an absolute or differential system which makes it versatile when combined with other sensors like magnetometers etc. There are some limitations in terms of sensitivity. For example, if there's no GPS signal, IE will not work correctly. This would require additional measurements from another sensor like compass etc. However, this does make sense because we want our INS solution to provide us with accurate data even without satellite signals. Also, sometimes after power-up, the system takes several minutes before producing correct results. Sometimes the inertial sensors do not have enough memory so that they need to be reset multiple times until they produce satisfactory results - especially at high sampling rates. We're using it mainly for flight guidance systems but also for autonomous landing solutions.

Pros
  • Easy installation (no driver required)
  • Fast startup speed
  • Good navigation performance within small areas such close locations/geometries where traditional waypoints become less precise due inaccuracy caused by low angular rotation accuracy between two consecutive position update cycles; iDRAC3 provides more frequent updates than standard IMU platforms providing much better positioning precision
Cons
  • So-so
