Buy a better, cheaper, more versatile arm

I bought these in 2012. If I could go back knowing what I know now I would buy something else. 1950s Caleb Gattegno). You can buy sets of these for a lot less. Or you can get the type of blocks they use in Mortensen Math (circa 1970s) or the related Math U See syllabus - these blocks are similar to Cuisenaire bars but also have blocks for 100. Use either Mortensen Math / Math Blocks Lake. or Kuizener sticks with a base of ten blocks can teach everything you can do with inchimals (except measure in inches) as well as higher mathematics subjects. In hindsight, I think the animals distract on inchimals (see redundancy effect and cognitive load theory), it's not necessarily useful to have block 11 and 12 (as opposed to 10+1 and 10+2) to think about bit depth and only having 12 blocks - instead of lots of Cuisener sticks or other blocks - limits what you can do and your ability to develop a feel for numbers. However, using other products requires knowledge, study or learning how to use them. Please learn from my mistake and buy something else. Although Inchimals are quite cute, they are inferior to what they used to be.
