God awful smell that won't go away

This handbag is so cute it pains me to write this review. I bought this handbag a few months ago and so far I am delighted with the look and the well thought-out functionality. She also couldn't help but notice the strange smell coming out of the bag. I could put it down to the black and white striped fabric lining all the pockets. Bad smell. Something like fish, urea and rot. I thought I'd let it air out a bit. After about a month the smell hasn't changed. I sprayed the entire fabric thoroughly with Dr. Bronner's lavender hand sanitizer and figured that the combination of alcohol and lavender essential oil would surely neutralize the odor. Not correct! After airing it out for a long time, it smelled of fish, urea, rot and lavender! I was ready to throw this thing away but gosh look how cute it is! I figured I wouldn't lose anything by actually washing it, which I did. I gave it an incredibly thorough wash and let it soak in the tea tree and eucalyptus soap, which usually does an excellent job of washing and removing odors from all sorts of things. Laundry helped a little but the smell lingered. It's still bad enough that I don't feel comfortable carrying a wallet or putting personal items in it. I finally gave it up and it's going in the trash can. What really bothers me now, after washing it didn't even work, WHAT is that smell? What did I smell and process? My current theory is that a small animal died while delivering these items (or shipping the fabric) and the stench permeated every fiber of the bag. Who knows?
