You do not detect any motion at all. There are 3 settings - On, Off and Auto. "On" leaves the light on all the time, which I don't need, I wanted a night light. "Off" does exactly what you think it does, leaving "auto" as the only option for motion detection. If they're set to Auto, they'll turn on for 30 seconds and then turn off, presumably only to turn back on when something is detected. I can move my hand at any angle in front of them, even touch the motion tensor itself, cover it with paper, block out the light completely - nothing happens. Tried with good lighting during the day and no light at night - no difference. I've tried multiple outlets, multiple locations in the house, nothing works. They are simply flawed and the company wasted my time offering them. Send this paper scale back as soon as possible!
