The stand seems pretty strong. Mostly steel, except for cork insulators under the top plate and thick plastic between the base and the two shafts. Once the weight is placed on the top plate, care must be taken not to twist the top plate as this will cause the waves to twist until you straighten them again. The product is advertised as being sand filled, but as several reviewers have pointed out, the filling holes are ridiculously small - hence the deduction of a star. If you plan to use the included rug spikes to perforate your rug or floor I would rate the product 4 stars. The stand can be easily leveled with spikes and lock nuts. I don't want to pierce the carpet and floor because I rent an apartment. Also, I'm very careful with speaker alignment, and holes will make it even more painful than it is now. Without luck, the speaker cannot be leveled with the supplied rubber feet. The supplied rubber feet have the same design as the small rubber tabs that can optionally be placed on the top plate. With these rubber feet, the speaker stand wobbles on a flat surface. This is because the base is a few millimeters higher on one diagonal than on the other diagonal. This can be corrected with washers on the insertion shaft of the rubber feet. However, if your floor isn't perfectly flat and level, then there won't be enough room to fit any more washing machines - they'll get stuck in corners when tucked in (felt floor protectors can come in handy for this). The floor in my apartment isn't very flat, so it wasn't enough. Two alternative solutions, both of which worked for me: 1) Buy plates/washers designed for use with carpet spikes (about $25) and 2) Buy better legs. I bought McMaster-Carr threaded "bumpers" for about $60. They are rated for 90 pounds. The thread size for spikes or legs is 1/4"-20, and the thread length of 1" is optimal. The spikes or legs are angled outwards, so in order for the foot to be evenly loaded, the foot must either pivot or have a rubber tip. The advantage of using adjustable feet over spiked discs is that the stands are easier to position. If Sanus added some spiked washers or adjustable feet I would rate this product 4 stars even if that means an extra $20-$30 on purchase. Price. Additionally, if they had large enough openings to fill with sand, I would give 5 stars.
