They seem totally unnecessary until your child catches a terrible cold. My toddler was miserable, couldn't sleep or sleep at night, lost his appetite, had the worst cold of his poor little life when I collapsed and only bought one pack. I won't say they magically cured his cold but they gave him great relief and did an excellent job of clearing his scabs with no pain and chafing using less soft cloths. He liked the soft feeling so much that I stayed alone with him in his bed and he blew his nose every now and then! I now have spare packs of these supplies at home in case I catch a cold. They're expensive and as another reviewer noted, they seem great for the purpose. So I often cut a new handkerchief in half and stuff the unused half back in, or if I'm too lazy I fold it after each use until it's as thick as a phone book and about the size of a nickel.
