They are good for gently cleaning items such as leather, plastic, glassware. I use them in the kitchen and in the shower. But for the kitchen, I also like the firmer loofah that's often sold for bathroom use. I cut the large one in half lengthwise and it's great for hand washing (in a bowl of soapy water). They don't hold a touch of soap as well as a sponge, but a loofah is great if you're trying to escape. from using plastic or synthetics and want something that can be composted or incinerated at the end of its life. Just note that there are some seeds that need to be processed or cut from the core to keep them from rotting there.
