My old catalytic converter was fine, but the oxygen sensor it contained was broken and impossible to get hold of. So I just replaced the entire catalytic converter on my 1996 S-10. Removing the old one was a lot harder than putting the new one in. You will need six screws and six nuts for assembly. My old one had rivets. Nuts and bolts is the way to go. You can buy class 8 nuts and bolts from major retailers or car dealerships.
