Didn't work on old laptop

I ordered an external hard drive enclosure today because it wasn't working as intended. My old Sony laptop turns on but the screen is black so I had to hook it up to a new monitor as a screen replacement but that didn't help either. I'll keep it in case he works on other things in "future".
