The only thing that kept my knitting skills from falling into "something I learned but never developed” territory was scarves, hats and rags for dishes to give up. With that decision, I compulsively searched for more books. non-standard patterns. I have bought some very good books but this one, I can say with cautious optimism, will be my favourite. My more skeptical friends checked it out at my urging and were all surprised at how beautiful many of the designs are. Most of the photos show clothes that look handmade and not homemade if you understand the difference. ;) What immediately appeals to me about this book: the inclusion of basic sewing skills to improve some projects, like the fabulous nightie you can see in some of the miniatures; the professional-looking design of the main pieces (many other books in the genre, while fun, have a casual "homemade" look, while those subtleties actually look, well, delicate); and a chapter on stockings because I never really appreciated the beauty of socks and hosiery until I started making my own. What disappoints me a bit: the inclusion of basic sewing etc as above); and the fact that the yarn requirements list exactly the yarn as in the picture by quality and composition, but there are no suggested alternatives like "or sport weight x skeins" as in some of my other books. I don't have enough experience to know how much weight a blend of 80% cotton and 20% wool has. or what an acceptable substitute might be. I have a few things to finish at the moment, but I can't wait to get started on some of these books. I think this will be a great addition to my (admittedly very specialized) library and I can say that it has taught me a lot about design, which is basically what I was looking for when searching for the best clothing book available. . . that it teaches me a lot about design, which is basically what I was looking for when I was looking for the best clothing book available. . . that it teaches me a lot about design, which is basically what I was looking for when I was looking for the best clothing book available. . .
