one cartridge is defective

I ordered a pack of 2 HP 85A cartridges. I replaced the old one with one of the NEW ones and the gasket broke. There was a blurred line on the paper. Tried several times, tried everything to get it working but it didn't work. I ended up taking it out and replacing it with a second cartridge (from a twin pack) and it worked fine. So there was no problem with the printer, but that particular cartridge was defective. Is it expensive. How can I return this cartridge that I have never used or get a refund?
