I bought two to control two motors. In the beginning the management was terrible. Very jerky, draws a lot of current. Upon investigation, changing the motor leads made it work properly. But the powered motors had color coded wires and labels wired according to the controller inputs - 50/50 whether it was a motor or a controller with the wrong logic. But the end result was that I was able to run the motors from the power supply as a source. I took out another controller and switched to using the PSU for power, there was a big spark in the connection. I jumped in surprise, then reconnected almost immediately. Not sure what went wrong there - the plug was polarized so I couldn't flip it, but the controller stopped working after that. Something burned out on the 5V logic, the "on" LED didn't light up (although it did light up briefly). I don't really know what happened, but I'm not sure if I wasn't the cause. I ended up ordering another one to replace it so fingers crossed. I installed the correct switch with the remaining controller and was able to disconnect it from the battery (42v) with no sparks or interference. So generally yes they work but be careful of wiring traces and possible inrush current issues.
