The AT&T TR1909 is a very good value phone with a lot of features. It is ready to use as a desk phone. Yes, you need to put in 4 AA alkaline batteries if you want memory backup and want features like caller ID and usage meter to work. But if you don't care, or if the phone is just a spare, just plug in the modular cables and you're good to go. If you want to use the phone in place of an existing wall phone, you must install the included wall bracket that attaches to the wall outlet that you have installed. The instructions are easy to follow. I wouldn't recommend it as my only phone just because I don't know how it performs under heavy use, but it's a good extension or backup. The phone has mute, redial and memory buttons. It has all the standard calling features and you can customize the ringtone (loud/quiet) or turn it off altogether.
