Open, Forward Presence

Just received this as an upgrade to the $50 Audio Technica cartridge that came with my new Audio Technica -Turntable was delivered. As the title says, I was immediately struck by how open, direct and genuine my recording was. Then I noticed how broad it makes the song sound, especially with headphones. You can hear each track separated from the next, as clear as a track's audio block. You can hear the panning and depth so clearly it's wild.

Pros
  • VM95 Series Dual Magnetic Cartridge with Shibata 2.7 x 0.26mil Stylus
Cons
  • Upgradeable

Can this relatively cheap pickup really sound that good?

After over 30 years my Grado MCZ cartridge was repaired by an overzealous cleaner. I also have a Clearaudio Aurum Beta cartridge which was refurbished by Soundsmith I have always found it too bright and with tinnitus coming it was even worse I considered buying the current version of the MCZ but it cost $400 and I am almost 73 and retired , and it was hard to justify the cost of the reviews I stumbled upon the AT BM95 series and was particularly interested in the MB95Sh will be properly aligned

Pros
  • Universal headshell with 1/2" mount for 4 pin turntable cartridges
Cons
  • Clarity

Comparison with Ortofon 2m Blue

I bought these on the theory that the Shibata needle is better than any other shape. It seems that any form of Shibata and Micro Linear should be better than Eillipitical in terms of clarity and separation. To be honest, I have a little hard time impressing myself. The blue Ortofon was an upgrade from my unbranded stock DENON TT wagon (which people consider the AudioTechnica AT3600L to be a special but budget device). The standard DENON sound sounded dirty and nothing special to me, but the…

Can this relatively cheap pickup really sound that good?

After more than 30 years, my Grado MCZ pickup was repaired by an overzealous cleaning lady. I also have a Clearaudio Aurum Beta cassette remastered by Soundsmith. It always seemed too bright to me and with the onset of tinnitus it got worse. I wanted to buy the current version of the MCZ but it cost $400 and I'm almost 73 years old and retired and it was hard to justify the cost. While browsing through the test reports, I came across the AT VM95 series and was particularly interested in the…

Audiophile cartridge Removes the 'veil' from music

This is my first new cartridge in 35 years. I wanted to convert my vinyl collection to wav and flac files and I wanted to use the best audiophile cassette. The sound of this AT-VM95SH is truly incredible! I'm an audio engineer and I have "ears". My old cartridges from 35 years ago were standard mid-range cartridges (Shure/Pickering), they sounded good until I compared them to this cartridge. This cassette removes the "Dim Veil" in front of the music. You don't know the curtain is there until…
