This is normal, except the waist is too small, so you need to go up 1-2 sizes. They are quite thick, wash well and look good on my son except they are really too tight. They're fine for occasional wear until it gets too cold for shorts, but not for the next season.

Bought these for my son who is 80lbs, 5ft 2in and 12 years old. They fit but are very narrow at the waist. Can be worn at home now, but I think a few more months, especially considering how fast it's growing now. All the details are sewn correctly, the pockets are fantastic and the material is dense. Nice, soft and dense. I recommend 2x the size if possible.

After my son maintained the same waist size for about 2 years, my son finally outgrew his shorts. We live in the south, so shorts are almost year-round wear for us. They looked cute and practical and the price was right. They are comfortable and soft. You get 2 side pockets, 2 cargo pockets and then a drawstring waistband. The fabric is soft but strong enough. They're not the prettiest inside, but who cares?
