I installed it so I can't tell how it works, but it's reversible so you can hold it up or down like a candle to keep dust out . Nice and bright. You can't use the inner glass for the candle, but it actually diffuses light throughout the room that's brighter than just clear glass.

This lamp emits bright light. You can use it with or without a matte finish according to your needs. The outer glass is large which allows the piece to protrude about 6.5 inches from the wall. So it's not about rinsing. It works well on the stairwell it's on and doesn't present too much of an obstacle when we're going down, but definitely noticeable when we're trying to lower furniture etc. All in all a very good thing and probably best used in wide open spaces.
