I had an air leak on my Audi. I checked all the vacuum lines and couldn't find the fault. I put some mineral oil in here, attached an air compressor hose to it, and inserted a smoke tube into the oil dipstick tube. A few minutes later I began to see smoke coming out of one of the variable valve timing solenoids. It turned out that the o-ring was hard and brittle and did not close completely. Definitely did the trick. I don't know how else I would have found this leak.

Okay, I know this isn't a shop quality evaporative smoke machine, so it has pros and cons. It worked, I found the vacuum leak in seconds. Pros: Compact design and I like the mirror so you can see how much oil is in it. Works well and smokes as they say. The case protects against heat, so it gets warm but not hot; a plus for me.
