Glad it's a reliable well made tool as I'm tired of buying other products that break easily. I'm assuming this product was oil coated to prevent corrosion (how about a higher quality metal part?). I took a rag and lightly wiped away the excess—it didn't seem wise to get all the grease off every inch of a metal tool with moving parts. It opens to a width of about 14-3/4", which equals a circle about 29-1/2" in diameter.

If you want the highest precision, quality and German workmanship then this compass is not for you. If you're looking for a tool that won't break the bank, gets the job done, and is likely to last, then this is it.
