Keep the panel intact with the best packaging

1 star removed because it had a slight visible crease, probably because I only ordered one and it happened during storage or shipping . So maybe I'd suggest getting more than one, but I'm not sure if that would make a difference. Also 1 star because not sure if it's due to flexing, but measured tension isn't as high as expected.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Out of style

Good could be better

It releases energy but it was difficult to connect with that energy. They have two areas that appear to be for soldier wire, but unfortunately they are also encased in plastic so trying to connect any type of wire to the contact points was a nightmare. In the end I managed to glue one, but for the other I had to use an alligator clip. It's a bit pricey but flexible and seems to output enough volts for my micro project.

Updated: Performance close to full spec

Update: Got another one because I forgot I had tested one before and it was closer to spec. In the spring sun at noon on a day when the sky wasn't perfect, I got 194mA, short circuit, 8.8V open circuit and a peak of 0.86W, 5.8V at 147.8mA. Under conditions fairly close to full specification. First Rating: Not even remotely rated. Expected power: 6V @ 166mA (1W) Actual measured power: 2.3V @ 156mA (0.36W) 8.0V @ 0mA 165mA short circuit current.

Pros
  • Robust construction
Cons
  • Newer model could have been chosen

As other reviewers have noted, you need basic soldering skills to use this product. It doesn't have any built-in connectors, so you'll need to solder the wires to the conductive pads on the back. Since I used this in a DIY project, this wasn't a problem for me. I bought two of these and have been very happy so far. In bright sunshine it generates 8 volts and connects to my Android phone instantly. I'll end up using it to power a small outdoor webcam and there seems to be enough power for that.

  • Good stuff

Too small to be useful

Good output voltage but very low output power because it is so small. Actual photovoltaic area is less than 3 x 6 1/2 inches. With a maximum power output of 1W, it wouldn't even be suitable as a phone charger. I took off a star because you have to attach your own wires and I had to use extra flux and lots of heat to do that. The 5VDC regulator, which is required but sold separately, didn't even have a hole in the case for the wires to exit. Chinese labor is cheap, but they send us products that
