I was planning on using it normally without the cap valves. The photos on the web and in the instructions show a lid with a lip at the top that rests against the top of the jar. The item supplied had a lid without this lip to prevent it from sliding down the side of the jar when removing the valves. So I returned it. However, if you plan to always use valves, the strap will hold the cap in place and everything should work just fine. I wonder why the stabilizing edge was removed from the current

I don't have a shifter so I installed a control hook in the center console and hooked it in. Since the strap is adjustable it was easy to shorten it to the right length and now it works great. No more waiting for the right moment to take out the trash or hoping for a new bag on the next ride. I tie my bag while waiting in line or just before going inside. The next bag is right down there. No trouble. It was more money than I wanted to spend but I think it was worth it.
