I installed it in a rather dark stairwell leading down to the basement. There is enough light (set to High) when the stairwell door is open, illuminating the top of the stairs. If you switch on the lighting in the stairwell/cellar, the night light switches off. It will return within two seconds if those lights are off. I bought this just before the house was sold. When they built my house they installed a double junction box where only one switch worked and the other was fake. there are no cables. The description says there are 5 settings, but one of them is 'off', so there are actually 4 brightness settings in total, adjusted with a simple press/tap on the bottom of the lens.
