Netgear WG511 Laptop Card WORKS GREAT

Background: I currently have a Netgear MR814v2 (802.11b) router and have had mixed results with my various laptops. My HP Workstation Laptop (Wireless a/b/g) and my Dell Latitude X1 (Wireless b/g). Yes, the smallest (amazing!), both connect to it perfectly. However, my HP Pavilion (wireless b) can connect wirelessly when it's in the same room or next door and the connection is still patchy. I decided the built-in WiFi wasn't great, so I bought a WG511 and also a NETGEAR WGR614 (802.11g) routerโ€ฆ

Great upgrade for old laptops!

I have a somewhat dated Sony Vaio PCG-23 laptop running Windows XP SP3 and wanted to connect to the new Airport Extreme Wireless Router controlled by my Intel IMac desktop computer. works fantastic just a few things to look out for

I've been using this product for about 3 months; I live in an apartment above my landlord's garage, who lives in the house below and has a WLAN router etc. Another tenant in the basement also has access. This card works great - I'm quite a distance from my router, but I'm almost always within "very good" range no matter where I am in my apartment. I can even go outside. That's quite an impressive feat, especially since the rental company's configuration only uses Linksys hardware, not Netgear -

Pros
  • stylish and modern design
Cons
  • is enough

This NetGear card has served me well in my 11 year old XP laptop. I think this card originally came out about 10 years or more ago. I personally have been using one of these cards for 8 years. However, since it is old, it does not support the newer WPA2 encryption protocol. It uses the older, less secure WEP encryption. So when I recently moved house and upgraded to the latest and greatest Verizon router with WPA2 encryption, my old laptop suddenly stopped connecting to this wireless card. So I
