Child size or adult size?

Bought this for my 10 year old who wears a child size 5.5-6. When I opened the box I was shocked at how big they looked. Decided to try them on as they looked bigger than my legs. I wear 8 on women and it wasn't small at all. The packaging says 39 European size, 6M. So I'm confused by their sizing, this is by no means a child 6. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the shoes look great and feel comfortable.
