The quality is quite good. A problem with the design prevents it from getting better. The bottom part that holds the middle plunger in place is the hole which is too big for the plunger and when you push to throw the dough it doesn't open evenly. Norpro needs to mill this hole to make it a better fit.

So I liked this product. I found it very fun and easy to use. Two things made it work well, in my opinion. Let the dough rest 30+ so it thickens. I also think chilling the dough helps a bit. I toasted these donuts outside in Minnesota on a mild January day, and I think it accidentally cooled the dough and helped it form.

The base of this donut maker is made of stainless steel, so it can be placed in hot oil. It really needs a lock washer because we had to tighten this thing all the time because it loosened up a couple of times while making donuts resulting in crooked donuts, but no major manufacturer would pick it up at the hardware store! This product runs a little smaller than I would like, but the larger size doesn't fit for cost reasons as I'm just starting out in the art of donut making. My first batch of donuts came out great see photos. The hole isn't always as round as it could be, but I don't care. I will tweak the recipes for proper batter viscosity and droplet placement in the fryer and they will be perfect.
