Oregon 42 031 Small Engine Tester Review

First I check the spark. I had a tester assembled with a carburetor kit that used a lightbulb 👎. I could probably save a few bucks by going to the parts store. Wasting time. Money and Covid risk! Never leave home and get real maca. All about the winner. Many Thanks

This built in tester is great for troubleshooting the ignition coil on a snow blower, lawn mower etc. It attaches very firmly to the spark plug, spark plug boot and the indicator light also shines brightly. During the day I could see an orange light when starting the snow thrower.

I have read reviews and observed that this design can fail. The voltage may be high and/or used longer than intended when the motor is running at a higher speed. I've also read that some people use automotive resistors which can overheat and damage the coil which can contribute to higher voltage.

Checking for sparks used to be a frustrating necessity. This tool and a pair of jumpers make it easy to check engine spark and spark plugs. My video shows how I use a jumper wire at the end of the removed connector to ground so I can see the spark at the connector and from the machine. Note the consistency and intensity of the spark.

Bought more than twice the price of others because it is expected to work properly, but it can't work stably due to the weak magnet. If you pull the mower rope, mower sharing with disconnected connection can't work in series. Cannot be returned. If you would like to donate your money for this article, you can do so.

I could see there is a spark in my B&S wood chipper engine. Much better than trying to ground the spark plug and trying to start the engine at the same time. One caveat: the female side was a bit tight when trying to fit it onto the plug and the male side was a bit tight when trying to get into the plug shoe. Since the fit was snug, it was also a little difficult to remove. Be careful not to tear the wire off the metal parts.

So, my big mistake. Didn't try it right away. I bought it based on numerous good reviews. After the purchase I have NOT tried this tester. Guilty. About 9 months later I am fixing several engines. I suspected something was wrong when all had no spark. Much to my embarrassment and anger, the tester had no continuity between the probes. After spending many hours trying to find no spark, I ended up with a bad tester. Completely out of warranty I cannot recommend this tester. It seems to have item…
