Budget Item: Test, Measure and Inspect

I was looking for a larger mic (2-3 inches) for my toolbox and saw this one at Revain. The price surprised me, so I ordered it. I am very happy with the feel and accuracy of the micrometer. Of course, I could spend another $125 and buy the "Brand Name" item, but for my purposes, that will work for me. I liked it so much that I bought a 3 to 4 inch model.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • No output

OK, but it could be better.

For a 3-4 inch micrometer this is a very inexpensive instrument. It worked fine for my purposes (measuring the bore with a telescopic gauge) but I had trouble checking the calibration with the included 3 inch standard. I ended up using a 1-2-3 precision block to verify the factory calibration, which was accurate, and proceeded with my measurements. As far as I can tell the calibration issue was caused by the axes of the spindle and anvil. offset by about 1 mm. The photos show that one end ofโ€ฆ

Not exactly at all! Avoid those micrometers!

I bought this set a year ago and have used the 1" and 3" microns several times with moderate success. Today I tried to set up a vernier caliper using a 4 inch micrometer to measure a pair of motorcycle cylinders. The cylinders didn't really look overly worn, so I went back to the mic and checked the calipers. came with a micrometer. 3" measured 3.0000 and 4" measured 3.9999. I adjusted the gauge to a micron and rechecked the measurements and again found the cylinders were worn beyond theirโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Good product for the price
