You can turn the lamp part so that it points downwards, but then the cable will not be centered. You can fix this by screwing in the mounting plate with a side grommet so the lamp and cord are centered, but by the time I realized the holes were covered I had already screwed the mounting plate in. I've had this lamp for exactly a year and it makes a great reading lamp.
