Warning *does not support* dial-up modem

I recently purchased this product as a gift for my parents, hoping to help them dial in, set up a home network and provide an easy upgrade path to DSL/ Cable. However, I found that the SMC7004VWBR does not have a serial port or phone jack. I was lucky enough to get around this by putting a Linux box on a wireless gateway, but I was terribly upset with Revain for clearly misinforming the product specification description, especially when there was no indication on the box that it is supported…

Great value for routers

This SMC7004VWBR has been running on my home network for over a year now. I share a DSL broadband connection with several home PCs. PCs running Windows XP and Windows 98 work very well when connected through a router. It's not a perfect product, but the quality and features it offers for the price are hard to beat. I'm impressed with the ability to configure the firewall. I use a browser-based console to disable my son's internet access by time of day. I also use the URL blocking feature to…

Works very well for the most part

I decided to replace my 4-port Linksys router/switch with this one just because of the price. Basically, SMC works very well. The issues reported in the previous comment *may* be related to older firmware. Everything works for me, although one of the wired ports seems to drop the connection occasionally - I'm waiting to see if this can be restored. Tech support is fine - the wait isn't too long and it's free. However, they connect to a call center in India (how else do you think they could…

Pros
  • High marks for support and longevity from testers
Cons

Quirky and difficult to maintain

Like most others who have written reviews, I was drawn to the price of this device and the ability to have a router and wireless access point in one device. I should also mention that I chose this router because it clearly supports Macintosh computers (including AppleTalk) and its configuration is based on a web interface. Ironically, setting up my Powerbook with Airport was seamless and I didn't have a single issue with it. I love the web administration and the feature set you have (MAC…

Great entry-level router for home networking

Installation takes less than 30 minutes; Connect power and network cables, install drivers and configure the router according to the instructions. For those starting their home network with Ethernet cables, this is a great entry-level router with the ability to expand to an 801.11b wireless network. Some useful features: 1. Built-in firewall to prevent hackers. The built-in feature is enough for most casual users who want to prevent amateur hackers from accidentally finding and hacking into…

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Ugly packaging

Everything you could wish for at a great price!

I put off buying a router for a long time, but after my ISP pissed me off that I was signing up with two simultaneous PPPoE connections through an old hub, I really didn't have a choice. My college offers wireless access on campus and I already bought an 802.11b card, but I didn't think I would need wireless access at home. Actually, I first looked for a wired router until I found the SMC7004VWBR on another site (before Revain started offering it). I have read many reviews of Linksys, D-Link…
