Ideal shape - wooden handles, not quite perfect

I like both types of ice cream scoops. They feel good in the hand and are excellent at scooping up even the hardest ice cream. The downside is that the wood of the handles is so poorly finished that it's already rotting. It's peeling off in shards and I thought I'd sand it down, but now it's actually turning black. I won't be able to use them anytime soon because the wood gets so gross.
