Inexpensive modern sound card with optical I/O

There are many options for sound cards with optical SPDIF output, but this is the cheapest option from a well-known brand that also has an input. It replaces a failed Sound Blaster card and comes with all inputs and outputs as well as separate line-in and microphone jacks. It uses the C-Media CM8828 audio processor, for which Windows 10 automatically installs an integrated generic HD audio driver. A significant improvement over the outdated and buggy Creative driver that the old card required.

Pros
  • Quick replacement
Cons
  • Everything is fine

Works perfectly on Windows 10

I was looking for an alternative to sound cards from Creative Labs (Sound Blaster) and Asus (Xonar) as I only had one problem with these two brands on Windows 10 So I bought this card, plugged it in and it started working great on Windows 10! (Windows 10 includes drivers for it.) I no longer need Sound Blaster or Asus Xonar drivers and good luck!

Pros
  • High test results for support and durability
Cons
  • Weight

Great when it's working and not next to another card

Ever since I bought this card it has been a bit buggy and the motherboard hasn't recognized it in any PCI slot. It recently stopped working completely after being cycled with sound maybe 10 times in 4.5 months. First Review: Pros: The sound quality is excellent for the price. Works great at advertised 24bit/192kHz. at least one headphone DAC (tested: Micca OriGen+, FiiO Q1, better than DragonFly Red) Cons: If you want to use this for reference or for gaming, an external PCIe adapter is…

Worked great! for 6 months

Purchased specifically for the optical input. It worked great for 6 months and then it started distorting that optical input badly. The whole point of using an optical cable is good, clean digital sound. I tested several input devices and found that the problem was with the sound card's input port. It's annoying to throw away electronics after only 6 months.

Functional PCI-E Sound Card

Seems to be working. I use it on an old PC with Windows 7. I bought it for digital optical input and output. The output works fine. I'll check the entry in a few days. It doesn't show any errors in the device manager. Required drivers must be downloaded from OEM website (not on CD or DVD). There were no problems installing them. There are drivers from Windows XP to Windows 8.

Pros
  • Rugged Version
Cons
  • For Seniors

Better than Creative

Creative didn't work well with my updated Windows 10 computer This card definitely fits. It comes with similar software and is truly plug and play.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Too stupid
