A senseless need.

WD's Secure Connect Cable is a well-made and expensive product that was designed to solve a problem that shouldn't have arisen in the first place. To their credit, it works great: the connection is 10x more secure than a standard SATA cable. My only objection is the need to order this special cable in order for the WD HD to work in harsh environments. It appears that the cable retention feature may have been built into the HD itself.

Right Cable Right Price

This is a genuine WD product designed specifically for the SATA drives (both types). As advertised it offers a much stronger connection than some of the cheap cables available. Also, Revain's price was the lowest I could find.

Not suitable for new WD hard drives.

Although Western Digital's online manual recommends the cable for a more secure connection than standard SATA data cables and power cables, my new Western Digital Caviar GP 500 drive lacks the required legacy ATA power connector - yes just a hole which I assume was on older drives. So the cable is useless. A standard detachable SATA data cable works well with a SATA power cable from a power supply anyway and is reasonably reliable.

  • I/O connector cards
Cons

Confused I/O connector cards

I'm still trying to figure out how to connect my hard drive to this cable. It covers all entrances. The power cord just sits there and looks at me. Put it in a drawer until the next flea market. waste of money!
