I am very happy with this item. A previous reviewer mentioned that there were a few splinters, I had a few but that's okay, they brush off easily with your fingers. There is definitely no need to grind the lead. Having worked with scented cedar in the past, it is a very dry and rough wood that is difficult to kill without splitting, so I think the finish is actually quite good for the material.
