When the fridge's small red LED comes on, it means either the filter is full OR the six month timer has expired since the filter was last installed. If the water is still flowing freely and tastes good, I simply reset the timer. I always write the date of the reset or filter change in pencil next to the LED. A filter lasts about a year with moderate use. Bottom line: If you rarely use filtered water, changing filters after a six-month timer is a waste of money, especially with these filters. On the other hand, if you're using a few gallons a week for a large family, the filter can start to restrict flow and need to be replaced more often.
