My dog is smart but unfocused and a puppy. I tried to teach her to feel it but she just raised her paw but couldn't mentally connect to the button. So I slathered it with some peanut butter and started sticking my nose at it. Every time I opened the door, I rang the bell, if only for myself. I let her go every time she ran it. I would poke her nose in her every time she wanted out or I wanted her to go out or in. Licking or pinching the nose will make this happen more easily. Outside, the cold is less sensitive. We turn it off at night so we can sleep now that she is big enough not to pee all night. Friends like it when she rings. Update: My dog thought it was a dinner call too. She calls at three o'clock sharp and stands at the bowl. I think she sensed that this caught my attention. Maybe she needs more buttons for other needs.
