Review on Precision Self Centering Doweling Jig: JoyTube Drilling Guide for Woodworking - Accurate Hole Placement and Centering Locator Tool by Jim Raju

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I'm sure it's somewhere in the middle.

My experience with this tool has not been very good so far. On the one I received, not only was the center block off-center, it was also not perpendicular to the clamping surfaces. When I installed it on a piece of ¾" blank, the center block measured .137" from the clamping surface on one end and .201" on the other. So it was a lot more than 1/16" in a space of less than 5". I also noticed that the pilot holes for the sliding dowel pins were enlarged enough to allow this clamping surface to rock back and forth a lot. This may be intentional, but in no way helps to keep the two clamping surfaces parallel to each other.Like another Reviewer pointed out there is nothing in the instructions that mentions the alignment or centering process. The turnbuckle also seemed to be stuck in places and felt gritty. One star because that's not how the thing works. So I put the unit back in the box (genuine laminated toilet paper) and sent to Revain for a replacement Hopefully it works as promised and if it does I will update my review with a higher score. Edit: I'm happy to report that my replacement unit seems good and I'll be upgrading it to four stars. However, the replacement packaging was even worse than the first. Revain sent it in one of their padded envelopes and it's good that it's held together because the tool bag was wide open and everything was loose in the envelope.

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Very expensive
