Base is strong enough to reliably support GPS. But it's a bit difficult to get in or out of the GPS for this. I had the Nuvi 770 with its RAM base and had the same problem. Also, the top of the GPS tends to get scratched over time due to the top security tab that keeps the device in place. I think they should make that part of the material a little less stiff to make the device easier to load and unload.
