The old ones come off by simply prying a flathead screwdriver under the clip to push it down and then just slide the strut off their little ball joint on your car. Inserting new ones is even easier since you don't have to fiddle with the clip. As far as I can tell, this is the industry standard for roof racks, and virtually all cars are of this type. Just be careful; It takes quite a bit of strength and you can pinch your finger like I did if you're not careful! They're pretty solid too, and the trunk of my 2004 Focus LX sedan now opens very quickly if I'm not holding it to prevent an impact, and it takes a lot of force to close it again. I'm sure it will get easier with time. I love them because now I can actually open my trunk!
