I ended up setting this up as a streaming camera on my home network using Motion on Raspbian. Essentially, I have a 24fps stream (when motion is detected, otherwise it's 2fps to save bandwidth) on my network (sending over HTTP on port 8081) that I'm receiving from another computer running iSpy is running on which the video will be saved for monitoring purposes later... For the time being for scientific reasons I will be watching my plants grow on my balcony so I can monitor the progress remotely. Soon I will get a remote controlled water pump to spray at the push of a button :) The quality is excellent. Setup was easy. Everything works great. Now all I have to do is find a good pan/tilt housing with motors so I can remotely control the angle etc.
