It's a wonderful experience for children. We have been observing and assisting monarchs for several years and bought this for our grandchildren to experience first hand. We grow milkweed in our garden, which you can buy in the garden center. They are very easy to root for future plants. After they lay their eggs on the milkweed, we bring them to our solarium or similar habitat together with the milkweed. Here you can observe how the caterpillars eat all the milkweed leaves and grow very quickly. Then they find a branch or something to hang themselves from and start making a doll. It's all fascinating and if you're lucky you might spot a butterfly emerging and drying its wings. Then they really climb onto your finger, and you can take them outside and let go, or stick them on a branch. The reason we put them indoors in the first place is to protect them from natural predators. They must have plenty of milkweed leaves to eat.
