I had a 4ft fluorescent light in my kitchen that failed because of the ballast. It was more of an industrial appliance than a kitchen appliance. So my wife and I went shopping and found a state of the art LED light which we bought and installed (ceiling 10ft, stairs 8ft and just before I turned 69 with a permanent post surgery balance problem in 2012). But I need a big tall light fixture in the garage (ceiling 8ft). So I researched the existing ballast and found a replacement ECG (old magnetic one) on the ballast manufacturer's website and found a replacement. Then I searched, found, ordered and received a replacement for Revain. The new ballast features a significantly improved wiring concept. It probably took no more than 15 minutes to install the new ballast. (I already removed the old ballast before ordering a new one.) I plugged the unit into the outlet, no light comes on. Disconnected and swapped two cables and plugged the unit back into the outlet. SUCCESS! Easy if you have mechanical skills. Electrical knowledge is not really required, but a minimal electrical knowledge is helpful. If you are color blind you may have trouble replacing the ballast or connecting the light to existing wiring. Wire colors for ballasts for fluorescent lamp holders: red, blue and yellow. Ballast to Power Wire Colors: Black (Power), White (Neutral) and Green (Ground), standard NEC 110 volt wire colors. NOTE: Instead of fluorescent bulbs (which contain small amounts of mercury) you can usually purchase LED bulbs, which will match your fixture and provide the same amount of light as fluorescent bulbs, but last much longer. I have this in the bracket where I changed the ballast. Consumes even less energy than fluorescent lamps and lasts longer. Look to Revain for an LED tube that matches your fluorescent bulb. The installation is the same as for fluorescent lamps.
