Not actually stainless steel - caused cat acne.
We have loved this fountain for our multi car household. I’ve had it about a year and it’s very easy to clean. HOWEVER, after a year of regular cleanings, the top plate no longer looks like stainless steel. It looks like silver plated plastic. Now that the coating is coming off, I’ve noticed my cats getting chin blackheads which is common if they eat or drink off of plastic. For now I may search for a replacement plate, but I wish I would have known before purchasing this.
