It is always risky to connect to the wiring of old cars. Using a simple relay I ran a wire straight from the battery. The relay is controlled via an old radio line. When you turn the key, the radio wire switches the relay and connects power directly from the battery to the new fuse box. Do not stress old cables. I added some sensors to the car and a new, more powerful stereo. And what's nice, if a fuse has blown, there are indicator lights to let you know. And a hard plastic cover to protect against stray items on hot wires. Good.
