This item works great even in low light conditions. The light fans are held firmly on the magnetic strips, but can be easily detached from the magnetic strips if necessary. The lights are bright white; two of them provide plenty of light in my dark shoe and linen closets. Even with some ambient light the light still turns on which is very helpful as I've read reviews of a similar product where others have described the need to use tape on the light sensor to block all ambient light. .
