I remember asking a working paramedic at paramedic school if he had ever picked up and used a caliper on call. He looked at me like I was from Mars. Now that I'm a paramedic, I carry one of those calipers in my pocket for a quick set of things I like to have on me. I don't use it often, but as someone who takes pride in interpreting EKGs, I LOVE having a caliper on me. One got lost on a call, today I'm ordering another one. Is it possible without it, yes. Can you use a piece of paper to draw a grid to measure distances, yes. But one day, when you're speeding down the street trying to interpret a subtle decision, right or wrong, or measuring P waves to determine complete heart block or not, it's REALLY nice to have a caliper. As for this particular model, beautiful. The protective cap remains. The ball at the top is more ergonomic than other styles. The ruler is also nice to have in your pocket. If you're wondering if it's worth buying, think of a future date when it will be SO handy to have. You will look like the god of cardiology!
