We live in New York in an 1898 apartment building. It has thick walls and lots of them and so far we have NEVER been able to get a signal in the living room. I'm happily typing this on my MacBook with a dirty martini in hand and excited to be able to use my laptop anywhere in the house. Thanks to reviewers talking about getting a signal on the other end of the backyard or installing a router on the other end of the attic and covering the whole house, I decided to take a chance and buy a cute little router with blinking blue lights. The installation was fairly foolproof (and as an idiot with stuff like that, I know what I'm talking about) and fast. My kids and I love the speed of this thing. We used the Apple Airport Express and as much as I hate to say anything remotely negative about the Apple product, it just didn't work. I recommend it without reservations.
