When shopping for a window fan, my number one priority was to get something QUIET. I have spent more money than I would like to buy the traditional dual fan window units that are so common today. Based on the promise and the confirming reviews that they are very quiet fans, I bought the popular Bionaire fan and the Holmes fan. They were ok but not good enough. I wanted the fan to be as quiet as my ceiling fan at low speeds, and those two weren't even in the ballpark. After further research, I finally settled on the Vornado Transom. This isn't a traditional fan, but some say it's very quiet. Desperate to find something quieter than the others, I placed my bet. This fan is REALLY quiet! On its lowest setting, it's a whisper compared to the other two. No, it's not a silent ceiling fan, but I would compare it to the sound I hear from an air vent when my central air conditioning is running. It's pretty quiet! Yes, at high speeds the fan is a lot louder, but at high speeds it moves a lot more air. To be clear, there is a lot of air movement at low speed, and at high speed the noise is no higher than other models at high speed. Another difference between Vornado and other models is that the fan speed is SIGNIFICANTLY different. The difference between low and high on other models is negligible at best. With Vornado, the low end is REALLY low... and the high end is REALLY high. So you have the choice between a quiet fan that creates a pleasant breeze or a loud fan that moves the air with little force. Again, this unit on the Heights was about as loud as the other fans on the Heights. There is no competition at the lower level. Do you already understand what I mean? THIS FAN IS VERY QUIET...MUCH quieter than any other window fan I've tried. Other useful features: Temperature selection works well. I set it at 70 degrees and it effectively cycled on and off as needed to bring in cooler outside air. Since I keep the fan on low, I hardly notice when it turns on and off. This fan also gives you more privacy as you cannot see if it is on or off. A few not so good things in it. First, foam blocks aren't very good. I needed an extra 1/4" wide block... I had to either try to crush the 1" block in that space (no) or use something else to seal it. Vornado should reconsider this strategy or include 1/2" and 1/4" blocks. Given the device's high-quality workmanship and higher price point, Vornado should come up with something more eloquent. Second, the console isn't perfect. You must point it DIRECTLY at the device while you are DIRECTLY in front of it. And the remote control range seems to be a measly 15 feet or so. I don't know if that's typical of this device, but it's definitely not very good. Despite these two shortcomings, I still give the unit 5 stars due to its EXTREMELY LOW noise level given the decent amount of air it moves. If I ever need an extra window fan, I'll take it.
