I thought I'd buy the 10-lb brick and break pieces off as wanted. This stuff is super-hard to break up, I have found. I used a hammer and whacked it while still in the plastic bag. Hammered away and VERY hard to break off pieces; the hammer went through the plastic bag leaving a hammer-shaped hole, but coir will not break! I did finally break off one corner, enough to make some seed-starting mix along with vermiculite, but it is extremely hard to break this brick up into smaller pieces. Instructions just say immerse the whole thing in warm water, and once any of the coir is soaked in water it easily breaks up and expands, as all the other reviews mention. But even though the smaller bricks of coir are more expensive per weight, they might be worth buying just so you don't have to go through the difficulty of breaking chunks off this large brick. I suppose you could immerse the whole thing in water, let it soften, then separate out what you want and store the extra wet, softened coir in a big tub or something until you want to use it. It does soften and expand easily when soaked in warm water, or even cold rainwater like I used.
