For the small (60mm diameter) motorcycle engines I work with at home these piston rings don't do much before they break. With this tool, it was easy and convenient to open the ring enough so that it could slide over the piston without scratching and fit snugly into the groove. No broken nails, no broken new piston rings. Cheap and worth the price. Some might say something like, I've only ever done it by hand and never had a problem. But I say that the right tool always makes the job safer, faster, easier, or both. Sometimes this tool is expensive, and sometimes it can be made with your own hands from improvised materials. (See my Ring Compressor review.) In this case, it's just special, but inexpensive, tongs that will likely last forever.
